Energy in a falling mass on a Spring Essay The aim of the experiment is to design a temperature measuring device, using a Wheatstone Bridge, with two fixed resistors of 47 ohms and then to implement it. The idea is to end up with a comprehensive set of results which allows us to work out an average, and then plot graphs to show the different variables. Preliminary work: Before I started the actual experiment, I did some preliminary work to find out the best set up for the apparatus I was using. It was also to test out the different apparatus that was available to me and to build a circuit which was set up to do the task which was required. Preliminary Diagram: The apparatus was set up as shown below: Preliminary Method: The apparatus was set up as shows above, and then filled the beaker to half full with iced water. I then put the thermometer in the water and added more ice until the water temperature reached zero. Then I put the thermistor in the water and waited until the ammeter reading was constant, and then adjusted the resistance using the variable resistor until the ammeter read nought. Then I recorded the resistance at that point. I did this once for each temperature. I decided that a reading every ten degrees was the optimum range, as this would give me a good set of results, without having too much information which I would not need to use. Diagram of experiment: Method of experiment: I used the same basic method as the preliminary experiment, with the following alterations: I did three repeats to find an accurate average result, which will enable me to plot graphs showing different factors. I used the results from the preliminary experiment to predict the resistance in the actual experiment, and I set the variable resistor to that resistance, then adjusting it slightly until the ammeter reads nought. I heated the water with a Bunsen Burner as this is quicker than leaving it to warm normally. I was able to do this as I knew what I was doing, due to the fact that I had done the experiment before in the preliminary. It also gave me time to do more repeats. Safety: Safety is an important factor to consider while doing this, and any other experiment. As we are using Bunsen Burners, heat proof mats will be used, as will safety goggles. The electrical apparatus will be kept well away from the flame. Gloves much be worn when handling the beaker when it is hot to avoid burns. Also books will not be kept on the benches where apparatus is set up, and loose clothing/hair will be tied back. A sensible approach will be taken and behaviour will be in line with the lab rules laid down by the college. Background Physics/Own knowledge: Wheatstone Bridge: This circuit enables resistance to be measured more accurately than by the digital ammeter. It does not rely on the accuracy of instruments, but resistors of a fixed known resistance have to be used. The four resisters used are called P, Q, R, S. The ratio between these resisters is: P R Q S The resistance to be found is P. Here is a diagram of a Wheatstone bridge: Thermistors: Thermistors are made out of semi-conducing metals because the resistance of these decreases with an increase in temperature. A thermistor is a resistor, and its resistance changes when its temperature changes. When the liquid the thermistor is in increases in temperature, the atoms in the head of the resistor get more energy and as a result they vibrate more, increasing the number of electrons which lowers the resistance. Microsoft Excel: I will use Microsoft Excel to present my data in table and graphical form. I shall also use it to work out the following: Sensitivity, average resistance, resolution and reaction time. Once I have this data, I shall present it graphically using excel, and I shall draw the following graphs using the data I have worked out: Temperature vs. Sensitivity (1). Preliminary resistance vs. temperature (2) Average resistance vs. temperature (3) Analysis: From my results I can see that as temperature increases the average resistance decreases. This can be clearly seen on the graph, which has an exponential shape. I have no anomalies in my average resistance, as the line of best-fit on the graph passes through all the error bars. I think that overall the experiment was conducted and executed well with no apparent disastrous inconveniences. There was however, a very small problem, which I encountered during the course of the experiment. The original thermistor that I began to use for my preliminary experiment decided to cease to function. This resulted in a loss of time, as I had to repeat my preliminary experiment so that any results conducted were not fair. Conclusion: The displacement increases and the velocity increases then decreases. The same happens with time and height. Displacement increases and the total energy decreases minimally as the energy is transferred to heat while the elastic potential energy increases and the gravitational potential energy decreases. Kinetic energy rises and falls as the spring is dropped and gathers speed before the spring takes the tension and slows it down. James Joyce James Joyce, an Irish novelist and poet, grew up near Dublin. James Joyce is one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century. In each of his prose works he used symbols to experience what he called an "epiphany", the revelation of certain revealing qualities about himself. His early writings reveal individual moods and characters and the plight of Ireland and the Irish artist in the 1900's. Later works, reveal a man in all his complexity as an artist and in family aspects. Joyce is known for his style of writing called "stream of consciousness". Using this technique, he ignored ordinary sentence structure and attempted to reproduce the rambling's of the human mind. Many of his works were influenced by his life in Ireland as an artist. He was influenced by three main factors in his life, his childhood and parents, his homeland of Dublin, Ireland, and the Roman Catholic Church. These three aspects show up in all his works subtly, but specifically in, The Dead, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Araby. James Joyce, was born February 2, 1882 in Dublin, Ireland. He was the first of fifteen kids born to Mary Jane Murray, and John Stanslaus Joyce. He was christened James Augustine Aloysius Joyce. His mother was a mild woman who had intelligent opinions but didn't express them. His father was a violent, quick tempered man who was a medical student and politician. He was educated in Dublin at Jesuit school's his whole life. In 1888, he went to Clongeswood College, but his father lost his job and James had to withdraw. He graduated in October of 1902, from Royal University. He was fascinated by the sounds of words and by the rhythms of speech since he first started school. He was trained by the Jesuits who at one time hoped he would join their order; but Joyce became estranged from the Jesuits and defected from the Catholic Church after graduating college. Joyce made a huge effort to free himself from all aspects of the past such as, family, religion, and country. He left Ireland in 1902 after graduating college. He spent the rest of his life in either Trieste, Zurich, or Paris. During this time he was very poor. He spent much of his working career as a language instructor. He was said to have known 17 languages. He also s... ...and that people should think on their own, without the church telling you how to think. He was a good observer of reality, which he loved, and he always wanted to get at the truth behind the appearance. He left his childhood behind and chose to write his childhood autobiography under a different name. He observed other people's reality and yet choose to ignore his own. He left Ireland, the church, and his childhood, psychically, but he never left them in his own unconscious. Still wishing to exile himself from his life, he almost felt as if by leaving all these places on the outside he would leave all his feelings behind also. Quinte Mir

The immediate issue is that Benton-Cooper Medical Centre’s MRI clinic has been open for 6 weeks and not performing to expectations and to the promises made by their new MRI provider, Quinte MRI. With referrals to the clinic, doctors expect to receive MRI transcription reports within two days and the current backlog exceeds 14 days. As a result there is a loss of patient referrals from doctors within the hospital and surrounding community which means a loss of revenue for BCMC. Quinte MRI must determine what is causing the backlog and how to fix it.Secondary IssuesA secondary issue in the clinic is that the MR Technologist is putting in a lot of overtime even though the maximum number of patients each week is not being met. Quinte MRI personnel need to examine and analyze the interaction between the capacity, the process flow and the bottleneck and provide a resolution and action plan back to the CEO, Dr. Syed Haider within 2 days. Environmental and Root Causes Quinte MRI, an i nternational service provider specializing in medical diagnostic technologies signed an agreement in February 2002 with Benton-Cooper Medical Centre (BCMC) for the outsourcing of their MRI services.BCMC believed that they could competed successfully if they had a third MRI machine as they anticipated continued growth in this area by 15% through doctor’s referrals from the hospital and surrounding areas. BCMC also believed that they could generate enough revenue and promotional support through advertisements with local print and radio stations to be able to own their own fixed MR system and be recognized as a top rated hospital for the area. Quinte MRI promised the avenue for BCMC to be able to accomplish these goals through its service reliability and access to diagnostic equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at a reasonable cost.However, these expectations are not being met and David Wright has gone to the MR Technologist, Jeff Sinclair to examine and analyze what was caus ing the backlog (bottleneck) in the operation. Jeff indicated that due to poor communication between the hospital and the clinic, mistakes were being made due to a manual process for recording information. Patients were being booked at wrong time, cancelling or not showing up, wrong tests were being requested or recorded, and patients were not being screened properly for an MRI scan.An assessment was being done when the patient came into the clinic. A patient preparation process has not been implemented in the new facility, whereas the previous MRI provider scheduled all appointments. Jeff felt that wasted time was being spent on delivering scans to the radiologist after each patient. Jeff also accounted for the fact that during May, the clinic used a Siemens unit, which took some time to get used to, however, now that the GE machine was in place (Jeff was originally trained on this machine), things were improving.David next examined the cycle time on for a 30 minute procedure. The table below shows the current cycle time of the patient, the MR Technologist and the MRI machine. 15 minutes was dedicated to patient preparation for an MRI while only 27. 5 minutes was spent in the Magnet Room. 42. 5 minutes was being spent on a 30 minute procedure. This was where the bottleneck was in the process. Staying with this current process and resources, the maximum capacity of this process can only be 8 procedures if all other inputs into this process ran smoothly (i. . no cancellations). Repair relationship and reputation with BCMC Alternative 1: (Strategic) Quinte MRI has found out that the manual process for taking appointments is creating many errors.If the system was computerized MRI test requirements could be input into the system and throughput could be maximized based on MRI procedure time required in order to maximize time slot available. Quinte MRI also realized that the MRI Technologist was performing administrative tasks that could be assigned to an assistant. By removing th ese tasks from the technologist, more time availability would become available for scheduling additional MRI tests. In order to process patients faster, a form could be developed that specifies what the patient must do prior to arrival at the MRI Clinic.Another form could be developed for when that patient arrives at the clinic that asks questions regarding health risks and indicating what restriction would prevent a patient from having an MRI. The assistant could take the patient all the way through the process until the Magnet room at which point the MR technologist would take over. There are necessary requirements that the MR technologist must do prior to completion of the scan, but the collection of the MRI scans and delivery of them back to the radiologist could be done by the assistant that is escorting the patient from the Magnet room.If we assume that most of the MRI scans are a half an hour, than patients could be scheduled every half hour in order to maximize both the capa city of the machine and the capacity of the technologist. Pros: By implementing the computer, there is more accuracy being collected for appointments and test requirements. By hiring the MR assistance, there is increased flow capacity because the technologist will handle only the MRI scans and not the administration task that were previous being done him.This takes the bottleneck out of the administrative task and aligns it to the maximum capacity of the machine thereby increasing revenue which provides the ability to hire the assistant. This would create reliability with the clinic again so that doctors will send their referrals to the clinic. Cons: A second MR technologist will not be hired and when it comes time for vacation of illness, there will be no one to step into the technologist position and ensure continuous flow.Quinte MRI would need to hire from a temporary agency in order to fulfill their requirement which means addition dollars will be spend. Alternative 2: (Tactical ) Quinte MRI could hire a second MRI Technologist to perform MRI scans alternating times with the first MRI Technologist to increase the flow and capacity of the process. This would take away the backlog and doctors could send their referrals to the clinic with a sense of reliability that the clinic will get it turnaround within 2 days. Pros:This would allow Quinte MRI to always have a back up in the event that one of the technologists is on vacation and / or ill. The increase revenue being generated due to increased MRI procedures could pay for the second MR Technologist. Cons: Based on the current practices, hiring a second technologist would alleviate some of the workload, however given that no effort has been made to correct the communication issues between the hospital/patient and the booking department, there is a strong possibility, that patients will still continue to be booked at the wrong time, cancel or just not show up.Without a procedure to hand how patients are dealt w ith from checking to magnet room, people could still be turn away due to health reasons, clothing that is not appropriate for scanning purposes. Recommendation The recommendation is to take Alternative #2 as it addresses all of the criteria by increasing the process flow, machine capacity and changes the bottle neck to the maximum machine capacity. It increases revenue and repairs the relationship and reputation with BCMC.
